Housing First is a proven, evidence-based model for addressing homelessness that prioritizes access to permanent, stable housing. Housing First recognizes that stable housing is a prerequisite for effective psychiatric and substance abuse treatment and for improving quality of life. Once stably housed, individuals are better able to take advantage of wrap-around services – to help support housing stability, employment and recovery. Without stable housing, attaining these goals becomes much more difficult. The Housing First model has saved lives and resulted in large savings and reductions in already over-leveraged community resources including emergency rooms, police visits and jail stays from formerly chronically homeless individuals. Learn about the importance of telling success stories from housing first initiatives, the latest research findings and how Iowa providers can help ensure the Housing First model is here to stay to help many more individuals gain access to housing.
